At SciAm today, my origin story for #scio12

Jan 16 2012 Published by under Academia

Sci is at Sci Am today, sharing part of my blog origin story, as part of a description of what my session with Kate Clancy will be about at Science Online 2012. We will be talking about taking risks in science blogging, what it means, and what our responsibilities are. And of course, we'll be talking about why we take those risks in the first place. To help jump start the conversation, I have shared part of my blog origin story, to describe some of the tension I feel when I blog and what the risks are that I take. Go over and check it out!

Thanks for sharing. What was the school's response when you reported the girl's story to them? And did you ever return?

I'm incredibly ashamed to say I did not report it. I should have, even though she asked me not to tell anyone. I was just so shocked. 🙁 I really, REALLY should have. I didn't know her name, and the teacher was long gone, but even so I'm disgusted at myself that I didn't say something.

We went to that school every year, but it was a middle school and presumably she was in high school when we returned.

Wow, Sci. That is a tough situation to be in as a grad student, and I'm sure you handled it the best you can. Thanks for sharing your story, and keep up the good work. Sorry I won't be able to catch your session.
