Did Your Daddy Teach You to Sing?

Over at SciAm Blogs today, I'm talking about a new study in zebra finches, and how much, and how, they sing. Is it genes? Environment? Or did your dad teach you to sing like that? Head over and find out!

(Too difficult to comment at SciAm.)

A cleverly thought out study, but, as usual, it completely ignores the females. Presumably the young males learn to sing from the male who raised them as nestlings. Therefore their sisters most likely also heard the same songs. Someone needs to study how the songs young females were raised with relate to their choice of mates.
